What is fondant?

The most common questions that I get are:

What is fondant?  What is the difference between fondant and buttercream?  Which tastes better?  Which looks better?

Fondant is a sugar dough that is rolled out with a rolling pin.  Before the cakes are covered with fondant they are coated with buttercream.  This seals in moisture, adds flavor and acts as a "glue" for the fondant to stick to.  Fondant is extremely sweet because it is mostly powdered sugar.  Some people peel off the fondant and just eat the yummy cake with buttercream underneath and some eat it all.

Buttercream is basic cake icing that is applied to the cake with a spatula or piping bag.
